Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and learn more about immigration law. Volunteers receive free or discounted access to legal training materials and classes.

Volunteer opportunities
TRANSLATORS

Application Period:
As a volunteer translator, you will translate documents such as birth certificates into English. The most common languages are Spanish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Russian, Pashto, and Dari, but translations from other languages are also needed at times. You will help provide quality translation services to individuals who don’t have the resources to pay a professional translator.

- Passion for serving others
- Fluency in English and another language
- NO prior translation experience required
- Pay for and pass a background check before volunteering (cost is around $10)

As a non-lawyer volunteer, you will participate in an eight-week virtual training course on the Fundamentals of Immigration Law. This training is free for all non-lawyers who commit to volunteer for four months. The class is offered every two months in Spanish and English.
Under the supervision of a qualified and licensed NOMAS lawyer, you will perform legal intake interviews with prospective clients. You will listen to prospective clients, gather important facts about their situations, and discuss the facts with a lawyer to help determine eligibility for legal services. You will help provide quality legal services to individuals who don’t have the resources to pay a private lawyer.
Non-lawyer volunteers who complete the Fundamentals of Immigration Law course may choose to continue volunteering long-term and complete additional training to apply for certification from the US Department of Justice as an Accredited Representative.

- Attend one three-hour clinic in person each month for four months
- Attend one in-person outreach event

- Attention to detail

All of your work will be reviewed and submitted by a NOMAS attorney. You will not enter an appearance or sign off on any documents. Secondary malpractice insurance is available through the Utah Bar’s Access to Justice office.
Lawyers who choose to volunteer more than once may receive free access to CLE materials, as well as discounts on the Fundamentals of Immigration Law course and other immigration training materials.
As a volunteer, you will use your specialized legal knowledge and skills to give back to the community and help those in need. You will have opportunities to work alongside and mentor law students and non-lawyer volunteers interested in a legal profession.
